A Letter to Bean

Philomena “Bean” Stendardo,

Although we did not get to spend time with you on your all-too-short visit to this physical world, your memory and spirit have indelibly touched our family from
Heaven and have forever changed our lives and mission going forward. You are an inspiration.

Before learning about Bean’s illness, we did not know that DIPG existed. We did not know that a child diagnosed with DIPG today faces the same prognosis as a
child diagnosed 40 years ago. We did not know that there is a zero percent chance of survival. We did not know that the median survival time is 9 months from diagnosis. We did not know that this horrible illness was robbing so many young
children and their families of the precious gift of life. Because of you, Bean, and the courage of your family, WE NOW KNOW. It is time for things to change. Let us all join together and try to conquer this terrible illness. Ignorance can no longer be an excuse. We know our enemy and we know what needs to be done.

Inspired and led by you, Bean, our family wants to help defeat this terrible killer by finding a cure. Please join us. Everyone. DIPG, your days are numbered.
